I remember Eddie Ashkar when he had his own pre-Urban Renewal store. We St.Joseph's School students would buy our snacks there. Eddie was a neat guy.

I lived on Eagle Street when I was a little girl and I loved going to Eddie Ashkar's, he had the biggest selection of comic books and he was a really nice guy! It was sorta sad to see him have to leave his little corner store.

I was brought up in North Adams, and one of my father's treats was to walk down to his store on Eagle St. and buy goodies.....he was such a nice man....I haven't been back to N. Adams since 85 so I don't even know what happened....probably the whole city has changed since then....God Bless Eddie.....

Before Ed had his store on Eagle Street he had a store on Center Street. This was before he was drafted into World War 11. The Store was purchased by the Ameen Family. It was next to Marchio's Bar which was on the corner of Center and Lincoln Street. The children in the neighborhood all cried when he left. If you didn't have a penny for candy he would give it to you anyway. When he left he gave all his penny candy to the children in the neighborhood.

I remember the Ameen Family living on Center St. I didn't remember Eddie's and the Ameen store were that far apart. The Synagogue was there, Cramers Meat Market and of course, my favorite, Talarico's Italian Market!

I worked for Eddy Ashkar for a couple of years part time evenings and on Sundays. His motto was always the customer first. There was no one as honnest and sincere as he. His wife was also a good person and of course one has to mention his pet boxer. I recall the day it tore up his convertible when he left it alone while stopping at the store. It was a shame to close down Eddys' corner for it was a great landmark. He had purchased the store from Mr. Lataif, not sure of the spelling who was a neighbor of mine on Gallup St.
