Could this possibly be the old Benny's Variety store on the corner of Holden and State Street?

Lou's Variety Store. This store on the corner of Liberty St. and Eagle St. was always getting hit with vehicles coming down from Franklyn St. I used to go to this store and load up on penny candy. Suprised no one got injured in any of these mishaps that involved cars, trucks and even school buses. If you go there now you will see that the brick is a different color at the impact spot from the rest of the building. Brings me back! As do most of these photos.

lou had the best hamburger. He ground up fresh when you needed a pound. He was the nices person. My sister and I use to help Lou put the empty soda bottles away in the back. He would give us free penny candy after we done. It to bad we don't have the corner store around anymore.

This happend one morning when a school bus lost it's brakes and hit the store.

It was actually one of those huge trash trucks thatlost its breaks and hit the wall. I remember hearing the crash and going there right after. Lou had to get all new shelves after the accident.

I remember this corner store as Belo I remember this corner store as Bouloin's (not sure of the spelling) In the 40's and early 50's I used to stop there everyday to buy penny candy on my way bacl to Freeman School after lunch.

I remember Lou very well ,he first owned a store on minor st.I use to go in everyday,he would slice deli cheese and bologna for our lunch.We had a tab there and would pay at the end of the week,and if we did not have the $$,he was always very caring and understanding.He was a a real nice guy!Then he layer moved to the local in the pic.

s dad owned the store on minor St. I use to go there often when working at Sterling Station for Don Harris. Both were great people.

Yes, you are right, it used to be Beloin's..not sure of the spelling...I used to stop here on my way home from school to get penny candy...I lived on prospect st...Gee, this store has had alot of abuse from traffic...

Lou followed in his dads footsteps. His dads store was on Union St down from Perrins drug store, later Poberts next to Sterling Station I worked at for almost 2 years. I stopped in for treats and soda almost on a daily basis. Lou worked for his dad in the store and delivered orders. And yes, he was a great fellow along with his dad, Both generous and always gave a helping hand when needed. To bad there aren't more of these stores around and this type of person. When I was growing up this type store was in many neighborhoods and on many street corners.

This is my dad and he is looking over damage from yet another vehicle hitting his store. Throughout the years, many crashes similar to this occurred due to folks losing their brakes. There were never any injuries from these crashes, only property damage. Miraculous!!!
