The building is not the Dowling Block but the New Kimbell Building

It is insribed on the front of the building "The New Kimbell Building" because the old one was across the street at the time, and was also owned by the Kimbell Family. The old Kimbell Building was torn down during the urban renewal. When the building was built in the early 1900's there were three Kimbell sisters who lost their father when he was in his 30s. The daughters built the building and during construction they hit quicksand, so they had to drive steel girders through the quicksand to build the building. It you look at the builing from across Main Street you will see in the alley on the sixth floor a wooden structure sticking out of the building. Many people want to know what it is. It was the housing for the organ for the Masonic temple which occupied all of the sixth floor and was built for them. It had a huge ballroom that was much taller then any other floor. When cleaning out the attic we found the old bell that was used by that organization back in the turn of the century. We very graciously gave it to the organization in recent years. What bothers me is that we never even received a thank you.

P.S. I forgot to mention, I was in N.Adams recently and inquired about that extension on the 6th floor...now I know.

I was so happy to read about the wooden extension on the 6th floor... Many years ago, as a teenager, I worked in Newberrys after school and walked down that alley many, many times. When I asked several locals why it was there, no one knew...now I have the answer...thank you!
